My wonderful experience in giving birth

October 19, 2010 12 Comments

“Congratulations you gave birth to a cute baby boy”

Two days before I give birth, there is a slight watery spots in my maternity underwear and it’s really hard to identify if my amniotic fluid is leaking because I am a first time mom.( As a first time mom, there are lots of discoveries and things to learn as you experience it. ). Then the next day I have a weekly prenatal check-up and I told my doctor about it. She requested me to have an ultrasound that day and we were surprised because my amniotic fluid (5.5) is less than the normal values (8-18) which is considered “Oligohydramnios” in medical term. I was nervous that time thanks to my sister Sarah for keeping me relax.

The doctor recommended that in the case of “Oligohydramnios” I should give birth via caesarean section. I really wanted to give birth in a natural method, the doctor allowed me to have a trial labor by induced. They have attached two dextrose in my veins; one of the induction medicine and the other is for my amniotic fluid. That should only last within 10 to 24 hours depending on the baby’s condition as I’ve heard from them. We waited for a couple of hours, I have encountered many moms giving birth in the delivery room and I heard how they struggle to give birth for their little angels.

At around 11pm that day, I can really say that time my bag of water (amniotic fluid) breaks because a gush of fluid spontaneously trickle from my body part that connects the womb. I have learned from my research that amniotic fluid is usually colorless and odourless so if it has a yellow color it is urine. I have learned from my experience that amniotic fluid is uncontrollable when the bag of waters break, it will continuously flow in a gentle stream. I was really trying too hard in my labor and experience contractions as well wanting to give birth naturally. Every hour they have measure my cervix and at around 3am the latest measurement my cervix was dilated up to only 4- 5cm and they advised me to rest.

According to my obstetrician they allowed vaginal birth if the cervix is dilated up to 10cm. I was able to sleep and I wake up still praying that I can give birth in a natural method. We speak with my obstetrician early that morning and she really recommended me to give birth via caesarean section and my pediatrician also told me to have a caesarean section to avoid any complications and infections especially to baby.

At around 10am that day, I prepare myself for the caesarean operation, I was nervous at first as I can see the different apparatus in the operating/delivery room. Then I remember what my sister said to relax and breathe in so I did it and I close my eyes when the operation begins.

First, the anaesthesiologist inserted the needle into my central spinal and injected a medicine I think it is a local anaesthetic. Although I am awake I don’t want to open my eyes to see the operation. I try to look at a glance what’s happening in front of me and I was imagining I am on top of blue sky clouds. Then after a few minutes still with unopened eyes, I heard the doctor saying “Congratulations you give birth to a cute baby boy” and finally I opened my eyes to see my baby. It was the most amazing experience I’ve ever encountered in my life that I give birth to a beautiful creation of God and I felt so blessed that my baby’s condition is normal.

After seeing my baby, again I close my eyes. Even though my eyes are close, my mind is so sharp at what’s going on. I sense that after the operation, they cleaned me up with an immediate bath (pouring water at my bloody body to wash out the blood).  Afterwards they put me on my stretcher and sent me to the recovery area, after a few hours because my mind is still awake I heard their conversations that if a patient completed resting time and can raise their knees they can be discharge from the recovery room and be sent to their respective rooms. As much as I wanted to speak to call their attention, I just raise my hand and they ask me if I can raise my knees and I did it. Finally I was sent to my room with my family and I felt more comfortable.

For mommies, Please share your experience in giving birth whether it is a natural method or via CS.

Congratulations! Having another blessing in the family is pretty exciting. I am fortunate to have delivered all my 3 kids via normal delivery. But whatever method of birth it is, what’s important is that we gave life. I agree that it is the most amazing experience for us moms. Enjoy your new baby! 🙂
