I created this article to help families and Filipino students who are preparing to enter in college wanted to apply for scholarship especially to the less fortunate students deserving and striving hard to finish their studies in college. I would like to share some good important information and links about scholarship in the Philippines that may help a student find a good scholarship for them.
When I was in fourth year high school I remember that I wasn’t able to apply for any scholarship because we don’t know where and how to apply then when I knew it, it was too late for me to apply but I am still lucky and thankful that I was accepted in a government school in college and we are all considered scholars there for as long as we maintain the general weighted average.
There are many reasons why most people wanted to apply for scholarship and one of the main reasons is poverty. Some people think that scholarships are only for those people who are in the top ten of the class but it is not, because even if you are not in the top ten of the class, you can still try to inquire in the school/ universities if they have other scholarship programs.
Even if you came from a poor family, student can still finish their studies in college with the help of scholarship programs. There are many ways to be a scholar you just have to be patient, hard working, and you must comply with the requirements needed, and obey the rules and regulations. I suggest that if you wanted to apply for a scholarship, you should apply as early as possible. So let us say for the 2011 school year, you may start inquiring as early as October 2010 for the procedures.
The typical requirements for scholarship grants to qualify in the Philippines
1. Filipino citizen
2. Not presently enjoying any scholarship/study grant
3. Latest BIR Income Tax Return (ITR) of parents/guardians (if applying for scholarship for poor but deserving students-CHED)
4. High School Report Card (Form 138) for incoming freshmen
5. Report of rating of last semester attendance in college of non-freshmen
6. Certificates of birth, good moral character, medical fitness and non-enjoyment of any scholarship/study grant by appropriate authority/agency
7. 2×2 ID photo
Here are some helpful links for scholarship grants in the Philippines that I personally research and I will add more details for other scholarships that I find.

Hi Larry,
I was once a student and have a family financial problem but then it didn’t stop me to pursue my dream to finish my studies. I eagerly studied as a scholar in a government school in college and to help my expenses I have worked as a service crew then later on become a local store marketing. You can still study in college by applying for scholarships that I have mention in the article above and also you can be a working student just what like I did before.

Hi Bret,
It would be best if your are going to inquire to your municipal or provincial office if there are any scholarship grants that you can apply because here in Manila there is a CHED study grant program for congressional districts and the CHED senate study grant program.

Hi Ria,
Even if your family is having a financial problem you can still continue to study. There are many ways to study like scholarships and you can be a working student. I also experience having a financial problem with my family but that didn’t stop me to finish my college. I finished my college because I choose to study in a government school, scholar and I am a hard working student before. Now, I am experiencing the fruits of my hard work I hope it may inspire you to pursue your dream. Believe in yourself and pray to GOd.

Hello Ma’m! It’s good to hear that there’s still people like you who helps those in need especially those who really want to study. I am 29 years old and did not finish yet my college education. My father died when I was 2 years old. My mother also chose to be a volunteer worker to help those women and children affected by war and violence. because my mom is only a volunteer, she can only afford to pay for my education until high school. So that left me no choice but to look for work while studying. But then because of high tuition fees and high commodities, I was forced to stop and just work with low salary (not really enough for my basic needs).
Ma’am in connection to this, could you find scholarship for me. Im planning to take up bachelors degree in Social work or community development. Im planning to take up the courses I’ve mentioned so that when I finish college, I want to help more people get education. I want to give hope and dignity to the poor people. thanks and more power to you

Hi Danefer,
Good luck to you. I have heard a good true story of a seamen scholar somewhere in Intramuros, Manila but I forgot the name of that scholarship. The scholarship name was like a name of one of our national heroes. I happened to speak with that scholar almost seven years ago. He told me that he passed the exam, have the proper training then he is lucky to work in a luxury ship. I believe he is a millionaire by now because during that time he is earning 150K per month. I don’t know where he is now because I only met him at my brother-in-law’s dental clinic that happened to be a patient there.

Hi Esh,
Let me share my inspiring story about my college life. As much as I want to choose my school and course, I did not waste my time to grab the opportunity when I passed the scholarship for computer engineering. Honestly, I hate math but I have no choice because if I turn down that course I may not be studying during that time because of family financial problem. I prayed hard that I may finish the five year course. I was also a working student at Mc Donalds during that time. Because of my excellent performance the manager offered a promotion for me as a swing manager provided that I should shift my course to management but I have been hearing a lot of disadvantages when you shift course so I did not accept the promotion. In the end, I have graduated Computer Engineering and now I am picking up some fruits of my hard work and patience.
If you have a scholarship right now, cherish it and be patient. Always think that you are so lucky to have it. Many young people are striving hard to get a scholarship. Regarding your accountancy course, try to reflect if you did not want that course then you should have change the course in the first year but you are already in the second year. So for me you better continue the course. I think you are only affected by your family problem that is why you cannot concentrate on your study. Always pray. I remember when I was in college before I go to school, I usually drop by at a nearby church to pray. Always think positive that you can make it. With your family problem, try to divert it as a reason for you to study harder and finish your studies. Smile and go with good friends. To avoid thinking those family problems be occupied and busy by cleaning the house, reading books, watching movies, playing sports and please don’t try drinking alcoholic drinks it will never be the answer to the problem. Every day we encounter problems so we should always face it and do the best we can to solve it. Make a worthy life.

Hi! I just want to ask what would happen to my CHED scholarship if I shift from my present degree program? I’m a 2nd year student taking up BS Agricultural Economics at the University of the Philippines. I would like to shift to BS Economics program in the same university.
Jem Alvarado says
Hi Paul, I think it is better to directly coordinate with Ched about this. If you are a congressional ched scholar better consult with the ched scholarship organizer in your congressional district for any changes in your course.
