Scientific Name:Fragaria ananassa
It is a genus of flowering plants in the rose family, Rosaceae.
Season in the Philippines: The peak season is Januray/February yearly and the actual strawberry season is from November until May. Strawberries typically grown in Baguio, Philippines that has 12 months strawberry season. However, the supply is limited when there is heavy rains (rainy season) because the strawberries are difficult to grow.
Healthy benefits: High in vitamin C (good for fighting colds and infections), with Vitamin B2, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Vitamin K, Copper, Copper, Manganese, Dietary fiber, Iodine, Potassium and folate. Strawberries are good antioxidants that fights free radicals (damage cells and cause most types of cancer) and flush out the toxins good for fighting cancer. In general, Strawberries are good for eye care, cardiac health, gout, arthritis, brain function and hypertension.
Taste and texture: Strawberry is sweet, juicy and has a twist taste of light sourness. The strawberry shape is cute that is somewhat round on top then curves thinner at the bottom part. The texture looks like it has lots of tiny seeds on it’s reddish skin that is slightly rough when you touch.
Tips in buying fresh strawberries Choose strawberries with green caps (the darker the better), firm and bright red in color. When you are going to place it in refrigerator, keep it in a container with tiny open holes and it is best to consume within one to two days.
