Every parent wants to make sure that their families can live a comfortable life, no matter what happens. To give their families a good life, Filipino breadwinners work very hard. But while most are good providers, not many are good planners. Only few families are financially prepared for life’s uncertainties. To address this situation, Philam Life continuously creates awareness about the value of financial planning.
Last September 13, 2012, Philam Life conducted a Family Talk forum event at the Hyatt Manila wherein the breadwinners/parents who are in their prime working years have attended. In the discussion, family-related topics like raising a family, preparing for retirement and handling family finances were tackled.
When I first heard about the Family Talk event, the first thing that came into my mind is how to raise a good family where I can find excellent solutions from trusted speakers with proven results. I am still in the verge of newbie parents who are trying several ways in raising a good family and open for great ideas in rearing my family. My thought of family talk is the positivity that it can diminish the worries that my husband and I have in bringing up a better family. Although I can seek advice from both of my parents about family talk, I believe that I can learn and acquire helpful tips from the family talk event and I am glad that I was right.
The guest speaker who shared an inspirational family talk is Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan. Maricel and her husband are currently raising five siblings. She focuses the family talk on how the family influences good values, the importance of union and raising a dreamer. I definitely agree on her that as breadwinners, we are not just working for the money but we work hard for the money to give better lives to our family and to make our life meaningful with a purpose or direction.
In raising a dreamer (our children), Maricel said that as parents, we should honor and respect the dreamer. Parents should guide their children. She shared the seven ways of how to guide our children.
- DARE – dare for them and with them.
- RAISE THEM – Raise them from here to there.
- EXPLORE – Explore the world with them.
- AFFIRM – Affirm them along the way.
- MAKE WAY – Make way for them; provide what is needed.
- ENCOURAGE – Encourage them again and again.
- REMIND THEM – Remind them on the dream and its best by your example.
Dreams are free so let us make them to reality. From Maricel’s talk, I was struck the most with the seven ways to guide our children. Her family talk was brief but reminds us to become more effective at raising a strong family.
The family talk had encouraged me to practice good financial planning for my family after listening and watching the videos and presentation about Family Secure as product solution. Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan’s talk relating to “What we are living for?”, and to guide the dreamer –“MAKE WAY” make life insurance relevant to my family. As a parent/ breadwinner, we also ought to be good planners for our family’s future financially, emotionally and spiritually. To make way for the family is to provide what is needed but also giving a limit on the family budget and empowering our children about the value of money for good use.

How Family Talk made me realize the need for life insurance and preparation for retirement?
Family talk made me realize that the need for life insurance and preparation for retirement is really important. It made me think that our family needed the most financial security especially in times when the children are still young and studying. In life uncertainties when the breadwinner passed away, life insurance will surely help in the financial security of the beneficiaries. The same way with the financial security that I think when I reach my retirement age where there are instances that I can no longer work or do business to generate money and support my financial needs. With retirement benefits, I can still support my financial needs; do leisure like travel at my own expense or any monetary demands.
How I believe in the value of life insurance for your family?
Hearing from my mother-in-law’s testimonial when she received the financial benefits through Philam from his husband’s life insurance, she told me that raising his son (my husband) during those times went lighter with the financial benefits. My husband is only ten years old when his father died. According to my mother-in-law, she has a good experience with Philam Life in claiming the life insurance benefits because it was a quick process. She deposited the money in the bank and just spent what is needed. She spends a little portion of the money in a small business to kill her boredom and to help also in some of their expenditures. Surprisingly, the money in the bank lasted until his son graduated in college. It only shows how valuable life insurance is in the future of its beneficiaries. Even without a father/breadwinner, my husband still feels like his dad is around supporting him for his future endeavors. This is why we both believe that life insurance for your family is worth to have.

Illustration of Benefits for Family Secure
I think Family Secure is one way to help every family to be financially equipped as they grow bigger. The benefits are advantageous, the cost is very reasonable and the breadwinner can maximize his fund to which specific needs to set depending on his family life’s situation. It will surely help to prepare the family for unexpected events and at the same time, for retirement of the breadwinner/parent.
What I like best about Family Secure is the Flexible Benefits for Changing Protection Needs. Adjusting your life insurance and savings benefits to prepare for a comfortable retirement is a smart move of a breadwinner/parent. Compared to the other life insurance plans that I know, Philam Life’s Family Secure is not limited to life insurance only. The option to adjust or convert it to retirement fund as you grow older makes it different. Also, the bonus benefit such as the Guaranteed Coverage Increase for a growing family with a max of 5 guaranteed increases without increasing your payment is very beneficial.
As you grow older with Family Secure as your excellent protection plan for you and your family, it is wise to conclude that you made the right choice in your family’s financial planning.

I am not financially ready yest but since I can provide my family needs, I guess it’s what matters most now. I do not have a regular job, my income is purely from blogging and the first step to my family’s financial planning is to graduate college so that I can get a regular job.

That’s something I should definitely start thinking about now, before it’s too late. As I raise my daughter alone, it’s really important that I secure her future. You’re spot on when you said that people are often good providers but poor financial planners. There’s a clear distinction between the two, and we should all start honing our skills at financial planning.

It’s always good to plan ahead for your family financially. I also belong to a financial company and financial planning is the best option to better prepare what lies ahead in the future because it is uncertain of what will happen to us when we have financial problem. It’s better to be prepared for your family.

Truly an important concern! Statistical projections peg a college education to cost up to PHP 700,000 on average just a few years from now and planning for that should be something every family prioritizes on.

It is very imporyant indeed, in our Church, you will not be allowed to be married and eventually have a family, if you dont have the capabilities to raise it, one of them is financial capablities, doesnt mean you have to be millionaire, but at least have a job to maintain.
