What to eat and avoid while breastfeeding?

February 3, 2013 20 Comments

Breastfeeding is best for baby and mom. There are many advantages and good reasons in breastfeeding your baby. With breastfeeding, you can protect your baby from bacteria and disease. You’re baby will be nourished with love through close bonding and the milk with perfect nutrition. Anytime the milk is ready and the breast milk has less colic because it is easily digestible. In addition, you can save money from buying formula milk and it does not produce garbage keeping a clean and green environment.

When I started breastfeeding my baby, the first things I have learned are the recommended foods to eat which are easy to follow. Certain foods should be avoided while breastfeeding.  I have decided to list down these foods because I had a bad experience when my baby became fussy after eating some of the foods to avoid while breastfeeding. These foods tend to change the taste of the milk, some foods in the list might reduce the milk production, and some can make your baby colic.

What to eat while breastfeeding?

  • Soupy meals with Malunggay leaves
  • Hot Chocolate
  • Malunggay/ Moringa Food supplement
  • Malunggay Herbal Tea
  • Fresh fruits, vegetables, iron and calcium rich foods
  • Oat meal
  • Lactation biscuits

What are the foods to avoid while breastfeeding?

  • In vegetables avoid Cabbage, Langka, Broccoli, Beans, Radish, Pepper, Cucumber, Turnip, and too much Onion and Garlic.
  • In Fruits avoid Orange, Lemon, Melon, Pineapple, Berries, Mango, Lime, Grapes, and Grapefruit.
  • Spicy foods
  • Alcoholic, carbonated beverages, and Caffeine.

You can still eat or take some of the foods to avoid while breastfeeding but you should skip breastfeeding to your baby in about 2-4 hours to prevent fussy baby. You can use a breast pump and throw the expressed milk.

Also, avoid smoking to prevent the risks of unhealthy conditions to you and your baby.

I have a pregnant colleague who will give birth next month. I will share this post to her. I thought as long as it’s soup it’s okay, I never thought that there are food that you should avoid. 🙂

It’s really best to have the right food for the mother and baby as well and to ensure continuous supply of milk too.

I’m curious not because I will do breastfeeding pretty soon (maybe that will be five or more years from now), but because I want to put this for stock knowledge. I’m a vegetarian so I need to ask, why is eating the following vegetables not good for breastfeeding:
Cabbage, Langka, Broccoli, Beans, Radish, Pepper, Cucumber, Turnip, and too much Onion and Garlic.
    What’s the effect?
    Thanks.

      Hi Rochkirstin,

The vegetables in the lists may cause colic to baby when they are breastfed from moms who eat those veggies. Breastfeeding moms can still eat those vegetables but they have to skip 2-4hours of not breastfeeding. If the baby has colic, he may feel uncomfortable making him cry at most times.

I thought fruits are good to eat while breastfeeding. Maybe babies don’t like sour taste that much. I guess. All I know is that smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages are bad for both the mother and the baby.

      Hi Noks,

Yes, fruits and veggies are good to eat while breastfeeding but it is best to avoid or lessen the fruits and veggies in the lists because it may cause gassy stomach to babies. I have tested it and also ask my pediatrician about it.
