One of the best things in life is free. This is what you can get by using your smartphone to communicate with the world. When you use your smartphone with an OTT (Over the top) application, it can reduce costs for text messages and phone calls. Aside from that, it provides users with a wide range of other interesting features.
Philippines as one of the Southeast Asia’s emerging markets have further deepened smartphone penetration in the region. This is a report from Digital Market Asia published last December 2, 2013. The Philippines have over 100 million mobile subscribers. Smartphones make up 30% of all mobile phones bought in the country (according to The largest telecommunications research site on the internet by Peter Evans posted last year). Still the numbers of users are increasing.
Currently, there are three Philippine mobile telecom service providers including Globe, Smart and Sun Cellular. I have been using two mobile telecom services – Globe and Sun. Both of what I am using was subscribed as postpaid plans. In terms of call rates, I can say that Sun Cellular is cheaper compared to Globe. Sun Cellular call charges –sun to sun is Php5.50/min, and sun to other lines is Php6.50/min. For Globe call rates – globe to globe is Php6.50/min while Globe to other lines is Php 7.50/min.
Let us say that your average smartphone call usage is 20 minutes per day. In a call rate of Php6.50/min, imagine for 30 days your bill will be around Php3, 900, you will have to pay a considerable amount to stay connected depending on your needs.
Now you can stay connected with free calls and text messages using intelligent new applications in smartphones. These are known as OTT (Over the top) features, and includes applications such as Wechat, Line, Kakao Talk, Viber, and Tango. Using these free calls and text messages through the OTT features in your smartphone can actually help you save from paying your Mobile Phone Telecom bills.
I love saving and using these free calls and text messages in smartphones is a wise move. Nowadays, people are paying more attention in reducing their spending because of the increasing cost of living in various areas. These free applications will significantly help users to cut their expenses while still satisfying the need to connect with each other.
The good thing about this is that you do not have to worry about the time and the extra charges in your mobile phone for as long as you have internet connection through data, WiFi or hotspots, you can use these OTT (Over the top) features unlimitedly.
The producers of these applications have provided a range of innovative features to users. Furthermore, 3G networks are now becoming much more widespread, thus, the charged method of sending messages or calling can be seen as expensive in comparison with using one of these free apps. Now, there are about 300 million users of such applications across platforms such as Android, iOS and Windows Phone.
The use of a scanning code makes the user’s personal information secure. For instance, WeChat supports a QR Code function allowing users to scan to select a secured connection and to reduce the time for exchanging contact information. This allows the user to actively control the information shared with different targets.
No wonder these applications are becoming popular around the world because their features comply with users’ communication requirements for sending text messages, as well as images, audio, and video. Furthermore, they are particularly popular amongst the youth due to the easy and free access they provide to communications services.
