The usage of Light-emitting diode (LED) lights is one reason why we have minimized our power consumption. It simply means that we have lowered our electric utility bills. There are energy efficient CFL lights but we found LED lights to be more energy efficient and proved to last longer than CFL lights. Here’s my comparison between LED lights and CFL lights to answer, Which is More Energy Efficient LED lights or CFL?
It has been several months ago when we totally replaced our CFL lights to LED lights at home. Before we are using 25-Watts CFL lighting per room (12-15 square meter room), and we have two 12 Watts CFL light lamps outside. We replaced our 25 Watts CFL lights to 8 Watts LED lights same with the outside light lamps. There is a big difference in the Wattage; the smaller wattage has the smaller power consumption. Aside from using LED lights, we are also using energy saving home appliances to lower electric bill. Therefore, our monthly electric cost went down.
CFL Watts | LED Watts | Lumens (Brightness) |
8 – 12 | 6 – 9 | 400 – 500 |
13 – 18 | 8 – 12.5 | 650 – 900 |
18 – 22 | 13+ | 1100 – 1750 |
23 -30 | 16 – 20 | 1800+ |
30 – 55 | 25 – 28 | 2780 |
LED lights only cost more at purchase but you will actually benefit from it for long term use. I actually consider it as good investment knowing the advantages that you can get in choosing it for your home use. I’ve created a table of comparison between LED lights and CFL.
LED light Vs CFL
COMPARISON | LED | CFL |
Cost | Cost More at purchase | More Affordable at purchase |
Life | 8-10 times longer than a typical CFL- | Used 10 hours a day, will last 2-4 years. |
Used 12 hours a day, a 50,000 bulb will last more than 11 years
No need to replace LED | ||
Temperature | Produce very little heat | Produce more heat than LED light |
Lighting | Good for a directional light for reading, cooking, or working at home | Good for general home lighting, such as illuminating a room |
Health and Disposal | Contain no mercury | Contains mercury so broken or waste CFL lights |
need proper disposal and be sent
to household hazardous waste collection
Durability | resistant to shock and vibration | sensitive to shock and vibration |
Savings | More cost-effective in the long run because it last longer, more durable, and more energy efficient | You need to replace each time CFL becomes busted. |
