How to know dog breeds? A question I’ve asked to a Veterinarian. Meet our first family pet dog “Tickles”. She is the reason for my query. For the record, she arrived home last May 9, 2016. We adopted her from a friend of my aunt in Bulacan. According to the Veterinarian during her latest check up, our puppy is about two and a half month old. We do not know her breed, but looking at her physical features, she looks like a cross breed dog.
How to Know Dog Breeds?
Is she a cross breed dog? I am not an expert in identifying dog breeds. So I wanted to find out, about How to Know Dog Breeds? The Vet said that the breed of the dogs may be distinguished when they are grown up. In as early as three months, you can detect by seeing the physical features of the dog. For the Chow Chow, they said that pure breed has a blue-black/purple tongue. In the meantime, we cannot determine which breed Tickles belong to because there will be more changes as she grows. She’s just almost three months as of this writing. She is still a puppy.
Since I am truly interested to know our dog’s breed, I did some research online. I found several websites that show dog breed categories and dog breed quiz game. Did you know that Microsoft’s new app can identify dog breeds from photos? They have the desktop version using the site https://www.what-dog.net/ or you can use Microsoft iOS App which have more features. Once you have uploaded a photo, it will match your dog photo from its breed database. I tried the desktop version, but I guess the results are not close.
Then I found an article “What kind of dog is that?” at http://sheltermedicine.vetmed.ufl.edu/library/research-studies/current-studies/dog-breeds/dna-results. It is conducted by Dr. Julie Levy with the assistance of Merial Veterinary Scholar Kathleen Croy and is made possible by a grant from the National Canine Research Council. From the list of dogs, you can find the DNA results and survey results of a given dog. I find it more accurate.
I look closely to the dog’s ears, tail, shape of the dog’s muzzle, body, and the fur. Voila! I found 70% close to Tickles.
The Dog’s breed results:
This is dog #115.

I think our family pet dog will look like this as she grows. From her latest photos, some physical features are already there except the black eyebrows and the legs of Tickles are shorter and wider. We love our dog. I will continue to study more about her and share my experiences in taking care of our dog. I’m glad that it answers my question on How to know dog breeds?
