African Talisay is our new tree plant at home. With the help of a gardener from Dasmarinas, Cavite, they helped us did the landscape and the positioning of our plants at the garden. At the front yard, the gardener did the planting of some flowers and plants. Initially, we have a Pomegranate, Calamansi, Dalandan, green Chili, and pine tree in a pot. When we moved to our new home, we transfer it and planted it all in the soil. This African Talisay was given by our generous neighbor.
So short, that is how I described this tree plant seedling. This small tree plant came fresh from Bukidnon province. Our neighbor told us that this is an umbrella tree. He just gave it last Saturday, January 21. It was planted directly at the side of our mini garden with the help of a gardener.
The African Talisay scientific name is Terminalia Mantaly. These trees often found along coastal areas, roadsides and parks. This tree provides a good shade. A deciduous or evergreen tree with conspicuously layered branches, growing 10 – 20 metres tall. It was the gardener who distinguished that the umbrella tree given to us is an African Talisay.
Link about Talisay – Terminalia Catappa.
First, we are thinking of where to plant the tree at home. We consider the spacing since this is a tree. We are sure that it will grow tall soon. The leaves are yet to extend. I love to see the Talisay plant or our neighbor that is now tall. It provides a good shade and helps in giving fresh air. Also, I noticed that this tree is sturdy. It was not affected by the strong winds and typhoon that we experience in Cavite.
We are looking forward that soon it will grow to be a beautiful and beneficial tree. I hope every home will plant a tree or at least allot a space for planting to lessen the effects of global warming.
Update 2022 – How Tall is African Talisay After Five Years?

Hi Super mommy.
I am a lover of an African Talisay tree, not just because I am an African staying in the Philippines but for me I would say this is the tree that should be planted in the garden of every house in the Philippine because the summer heat here is unforgiving.
I have planted two African Talisay trees in my property at Tagaytay they have growned tall I Put a Kubo or Nipa hut under the African Talisay it is providing a great shade.
I want to plant more of African Talisay trees on my 2 Hectares farm land at Batangas for a private recreation and meditation park.

I bought 2 African Talisay already. Quite pricey but worth it. How do you propagate it? Been searching in google and yahoo but couldn’t find any. Maybe you can help me. Thanks

Hi Nelson,
Sorry I did not know yet how to propagate African Talisay because this tree was only given by a friend. I’ll try to ask him.

Hello ,
2 years ago I bought 2 African Talisay tree and planted it in front of our house.. now it’s slmost 15meters high.
Our neighbors keeps asking what tree it was And where I bought it. Then I came to an idea to propagate it. As an experimental thing, I just cut a little branch out of the full grown tree, then I place it in a planting bag (black round plastic which plant sellers use) . I water it everyday and place it where sun raises will reach it but not directly.. it was a success. Now I had grown almost a hundred seedlings and sell it . Pwede part time business. Hahaha. I sell a 1.5 meter seedling for the same price I bought my original trees. Yes the tree is quite expensive. Because it takes time until the main branch (branch that grows straight up) grows out.
Hope I was helpful with my experience..

Hi Bryan,
Thank you for sharing your experience. Now, I am thinking about it too.
Lisa says
Hi Bryan,
Are you selling the variegated type? How tall can it grow? I’ve heard the variegated type is much smaller than the green ones, I’m planning to grow it on a big cement pot about 2 cu meter pot on our building’s rooftop, I’m worried that when it grows, the roots will eventually destroy the cement pot, thank you.

Does African Talisay attrack catepillars?
Jem Alvarado says
Hello Jeanne,
Based on my experience with our African Talisay Tree for 6 years, I didn’t notice caterpillars on the leaves. There is a season where there are some small black bits falling from the tree> we just simply sweep it off and throw.
