Ok. Let proceed to the 100 Peso Healthy Ulam Challenge! Since we are approaching Nutrition Month, my fellow mom and I are preparing for healthy meals to share. My fellow mom researcher suggested the 100 peso challenge. Saan ba aabot ang 100 pesos mo? So, we come up with the 100 Peso Healthy Ulam Challenge. The cost of ulam actually depends on the size of your family, the type of menu to prepare or buy, and the current market value of the products. But, with this challenge, let’s try! I’m glad I found a healthy and delicious recipe for the whole family that might fit the 100 peso challenge. It is the Fish Lumpiang Shanghai recipe.
Fish Lumpiang Shanghai Health benefits
- Dalagang Bukid/Red snapper is a low-calorie, lean source of protein that is rich in selenium, vitamin A, potassium and omega-3 fatty acids
- Jicama/ Singkamas – contains many important vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, folate, potassiumand magnesium. It’s low in calories and high in fiber and water.
- Carrot – contains zeaxanthin, lutein, gamma-carotene, Vitamin A,Vitamin B, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, minerals and fiber.

Fish Lumpiang Shanghai Recipe
Ingredients
- 3-4 pcs Dalagang Bukid/ Red Snapper Fish Medium size, Cleaned, Season with Salt and pepper
- 1 pc Jicama Medium Size, grind
- 1 pc Carrot Medium Size, grind
- 4 cloves garlic mince
- 1 pc white onion Medium Size, mince
- 4 pcs Kintsay or Celery 4-6 stalks with leaves, mince
- 2 sets Lumpia Wrapper Small, 10 pcs per set
- 1 pc egg Medium Size
- 1/4 tsp salt or to taste
- 2-3 pcs Calamansi or Half Lemon (squeeze in the mixture)
- cooking oil
Instructions
- Steam the fish in 10 minutes. Mince the garlic, onion, and kintsay. Grind the Jicama or Singkamas and carrots. Remove the excess juice from the ground Jicama and carrots.
- Carefully debone fish and mash the meat. Combine the mash fish meat with ground Jicama and carrots.
- In a pan, sauté garlic, onion, and kintsay followed by the mixture of fish, jicama and carrtos. Mix together in 3 minutes, low heat. Turn off the stove, then add 1 egg yolk. Let cool for 5-10 minutes.
- Wrap the sautéed fish and vegetables in a lumpia wrapper. Once wrapped, you can fry it with cooking oil.

- 3-4 pieces medium size Dalagang bukid/red snapper fish - 1/4 kilo - 50 pesos
- 1 medium Jicama or Singkamas - 8 pesos
- 1 medium size carrot - 10 pesos
- 1 medium white onion - 4 pesos
- Kintsay - 5
- 4 gloves garlic - 3 pesos
- 1 egg - 7 pesos
- 2 sets / 2 tanda of Lumpia wrapper - 16
- Calamansi - 3 pesos
- Cooking Oil pack - 10 pesos
