Making loud noises is the usual tradition observed here in the Philippines in welcoming the new year. It is said to be done when the clock ticks at exactly 12AM 1st day of the new year. According to the beliefs and superstitions, it drives away bad luck and evil spirits. Some people are using fireworks to produce loud sounds and some are using alternative noisemakers. Even children participated in making loud noises to welcome the new year.
The best alternative noisemaker for children that I recommend is the use of drum set. I have seen some victims of fireworks and notice that there are also children victims. From the news, these children uses piccolo firework. I get pity on these victims and I believe that the best way to avoid this from happening is to look for a safer alternative noisemaker. Aside from drum set, for parents you can use the radio and turn the volume to high to produce loud sound or you can use the silver/ aluminum kitchenware like casserole, basin, ladle, etc.
