Make Study Habits More Interesting in Younger Students

June 19, 2014 1 Comment

I love being a hands-on mom to my children.  Now that my eldest son is back to school as grade 1, we are back to our study habits. At first the transition from summer vacation to regular school day study habits is not that easy. Knowing our child spent most of their times playing during the summer vacation. Let me share how I make my son’s study habits more interesting.

Google Images as Relevant Images when Studying

Google Images as Relevant Images when Studying

Children nowadays are exposed to different electronic gadgets like iPhone, iPad, tablets, laptops, etc. I admit that it did help sometimes to tame my child with its enjoyable games and apps. But, the thing is it is not actually helping me to discipline my child. Based on my observation when I let him play in a prolonged period (be it educational game or his favorite game), he will get used to it and will not be interested with other activities like reading and writing. So, the first thing that I did when summer vacation is about to end is to lessen his exposure from using the electronic gadgets.

Make Study Habits More Interesting in Younger Students

Your child may find reading a school text book boring which I and my son experience sometimes. So, how did I make reading a school text book  and doing study habits more interesting?

  • Show real Images of the topics being discussed from the book using  google images. You can turn on the electronic gadget such as the iPhone or tab. Then,  go to www.google.com, hit Images and write the topic being discussed  from the book in the search engine box. Take note that not all images that comes up in search engines are reliable so as a parent or guardian of the child, you should choose a more relevant image from the lists. This is an interactive way while studying that your child will be able to actually see the image relevant to the topic in the book. They tend to be excited to learn more as they see related images. I use this when we study Civics and Culture.

  • Give examples using the things or persons that are close to your child or familiar with. When we read and study books in Language, Math, and Filipino, I do not just rely in school text book exercises and examples. I would give more examples to my child that he could easily understand and that is with the use of things that are close to him and familiar with. One example is the use of his favorite pet name “Ginger” cat as proper noun.

  • Display honors and awards. If your child has honors and awards before, I think it is best to display it so he would be reminded to study harder not just because of the awards but explain to him the advantage of studying well. I remember during the first year in school of my son in nursery, he saw the awards display of his uncle at home. His uncle used to buy delicious foods and quality brand of things even toys for them. We told my son “when you study well, you could be somebody you dream of when you grow up and live comfortably”.

  • Don’t pressure young students. Setting a study time and following it on time will help your child build a good study habit and discipline with time. Make sure that before studying, the child had eaten a meal. After studying, you should also have something delightful for them to eat. I think this way, we don’t pressure our young students making them more interesting with study habits.
