DIY: Adhesive Shelf Paper for Wood Furniture

How can you refurbish an old shelf of a laminated wood? You will notice that most wood furniture today are made up of laminated wood. The disadvantage of laminated wood is that it is not as durable as the hard wood. Usually the outer covering of it will be having discoloration or unpleasant appearance when use for couple times. There is a solution to that using adhesive shelf paper for wood.

DIY using Adhesive Shelf Paper for wood

It was actually last year when I started to use the adhesive shelf paper.My son’s study table is made up of laminated wood. After more than two years, the surface has unpleasant discoloration. So, to refurbish the surface, I replaced the thin covering with the blue adhesive contact paper last year. I do not want to throw his folding study table because it is still usable. It was only last year when I did that.

Another year has passed. Kids always like to draw and do a lot of art works. Part of his study table covering was damage. Since the laminated wood is still usable, I replaced the shelf paper with a new design. The hues of brown at home is relaxing. From blue table, my son’s table is now a shade of brown. The wood type color is Ash. Ash is one of the most common wood furniture type. Other wood furniture type are Cherry, Hickory, Walnut, Red Oak, White Oak, Soft Maple, Birch, Hard Maple, Alder, Poplar, Lyptus, Mahogany, and Knotty Pine.

How to use the adhesive shelf Paper?

1. Clean the shelf first. Remove the old thin covering of the laminated wood if it still has.
2. Measure the size of the material to cover. Make an allowance of at least 1/2 to an inch from sides of the actual size before cutting the adhesive paper.
3. Begin the application of adhesive shelf paper from the side to the end. Remember to make 1/2 to an inch allowance from sides. For the sides, just cut the appropriate side fit to fold when you stick it.
4. Pressed the applied adhesive paper using hands to stick it firmly.

The advantage of using adhesive shelf paper for Wood is that it comes in different designs. You can easily replace it with a new design. The price is affordable. You can do-it-yourself. My next project is to replace the table top thin cover of our round table to this Ask wood type design.
