Congenital Anomaly Scan in Pregnancy

September 6, 2012 19 Comments

A few days ago, my husband and I went to the ultrasound clinic to undergo a congenital anomaly scan. In my first pregnancy, I have only done a normal ultrasound scan so this kind of ultrasound scan is something new to me. Since I have already changed my Obstetrician, her approach and procedure are different with the first one who took care of  my delivery with my first baby. I am already on my second trimester and one thing that my OB/GYN advise is to take a congenital anomaly scan.

Congenital anomaly scan- OB ultrasound

Congenital anomaly scan- OB ultrasound

According to my Obstetrician (Dra. Regta Pichay with clinics at MCU, St. Lukes medical center and East Avenue Medical Center), the congenital anomaly scan purpose is to confirm in checking that your baby is developing normally. The OB-sonologistwill take a look at where the placenta is lying in your uterus and evaluate the amniotic fluid, spine, heart, stomach, cord, limbs and kidneys. They will measure the head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC) and femur or thigh bone (FL). In this ultrasound scan, the OB-sonologist will  take a look at you baby’s arms, legs, hands, feet, fingers and toes. It took us 30-45 minutes for the Congenital anomaly scan.

Know the gender of the Baby

On the 20th week of pregnancy, the gender of the baby can be determine to some pregnant women depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy and how your baby is positioned during the scan. It sounded so true because at 20 weeks when I have my congenital anomaly scan, the OB-sonologist was able to determine the gender of my baby. My husband and I are so happy because we will be having a baby girl. Our first child is a boy and with the coming baby they are now pair a bundle of joy for our family.

Rate/Price of Congenital Anomaly Scan

I guess the price or rate of Congenital anomaly scan varies in different hospitals, clinic and location. I am thankful that my Obstetrician referred me to the nearest location at The N. Cariño Ultrasound Clinic located at 405 A. Mabini St., Caloocan City. The OB-GYN ultrasonologist there is Dra. Neth C. Cariño. The price or rate of the Congenital Anomaly Scan is approximately Php 1, 100 (As of September 3, 2012). If you are planning to have the Congenital anomaly scan, be sure to be there as early as 9AM. They accept patients on the first come first serve basis and do not entertain appointments.

I think P1,100 is a reasonable cost for additional guaranty that a baby is safe.

I was able to learn more about this scan through my sister-in-law. She took this last year, thus finding out that her baby was boy (who is 5 months now!). Anyway, congrats with your new baby girl! 🙂

Wow! Congratulations to you and your hubby. You are proud parents of this incoming baby girl. I was not able to have this kind of sonogram when I was pregnant with my last child.

With the advancement of technology nowadays, such kind of testing is one of the best ever. Why? because it can detect problems at its earliest stage thus making it more easier to be treated.

The thing about this procedure if the expecting parents are ready if ever there’s something wrong in their baby’s development.

this is indeed very helpful to as well detect any abnormal developments at an early stage rather be surprise later especially during delivery.

Hmm…I dunno. It would not change anything so I might as well go through the pregnancy without the scan.

precaution is way better than applying a cure a medical condition in the future for your baby. it is a must duty now among mums to check for the health condition of their babies … thank goodness for the advance technology/.
